Disability Life Story: iplanit and Warren Bailey

31 October 2018

As a Mansfield care home adopts electronic care planning, one resident says the technology has helped him keep track of his own personalised care package.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Corner House Residential Care Home is one of nine services operated by the national care and support provider to trial the iplanit software.

Resident Warren Bailey is among those at Corner House to try the technology which, unlike traditional paper plans, stores up-to-date care plans online in a customisable format.

The home has undergone the installation of Wi-Fi technology during a recent building refurbishment and, as with other SSL services, has been supplied with tablets, which both residents and staff use to help keep track of care plans.

As Warren can’t read or write, staff have instead used pictures of familiar people or objects to depict topics on the support plan. His medical needs, for example, may use a photo of Warren’s GP, while an upcoming trip to the cinema might be represented by a photo of the specific cinema Warren visits.

Warren said: “I had computer lessons [via Sanctuary], so I know how to use the tablet. I like watching cartoons and listening to music on it. I have my photos on and like to look at what I’ve been doing. I use iplanit with the staff.

“My favourite things [about electronic care planning] are that it has my photos, it’s my plan, it’s all about me.”

SSL local service manager Jo Hardwick said: “With the iplanit technology, Warren has complete control of his care plan, which is presented in a much more appealing, intuitive format than a paper file.

“He greatly enjoys the bright colours and the fact that staff can now come to wherever is most comfortable for him to discuss the plan, rather than meeting in an office room."

Personalised care is about understanding and meeting the needs and preferences of the individual, and electronic care planning is already taking this to the next level for Warren and our other residents.
