A Mansfield woman who was living with anxiety and smoking 150 cigarettes a day has overcome her addiction with help from personalised care from Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL).

Maria Price* was living in a mental health unit before her referral to SSL’s Corner House Residential Care Home in 2010, which offer specialist support for people with learning disabilities.

Her diagnosis of anxiety was creating difficulties with sleeping, relaxing and thinking, as well as generating a negative self-image.

The difficulties manifested themselves through chain smoking, as well as a caffeine habit that saw Maria drink 50 cups of coffee a day.

This changed when she was referred to Corner House, where she worked closely with staff to create her personalised care plan that took into account her needs, tastes and goals.

As her anxiety reduced and mental health improved, Maria was reduced her dependency on cigarettes and caffeine. With the return of her self-confidence, Maria has been able to reassert control and reduce her cigarette usage to just two a day.

Eight years later, Maria has made new friends, feels better about herself and has taken on a post as Events Manager at Corner House, co-ordinating events for other residents.

Her work has seen her organise activities for people’s birthdays, Royal Wedding celebrations and external events involving the wider Mansfield community.

Maria said: “I am so much better nowadays; I look better and I feel better about myself. I didn’t have friends before I moved to Corner House and I have lots of friends now.

“[Corner House] is my forever home and I am at my happiest here.”

SSL local service manager Joanne Hardwick said: “Maria started in a difficult place but, thanks to personalised care, we’ve been able to help her overcome the challenges in her life.

“She has settled in to Corner House fantastically well over the past eight years and become part of the family.”

I am so much better nowadays; I look better and I feel better about myself. I didn’t have friends before I moved to Corner House and I have lots of friends now.
