Disability Life Story: Paul Taylor

29 November 2019

Paul Taylor from Bury St Edmunds is thrilled that he has finally found a place he can call home.

Paul Taylor, who is receiving help from Sanctuary Supported Living

Paul lives at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Hilltop House, which supports adults with physical disabilities. He arrived in March 2018 after having several strokes that left him with a brain injury and limited limb function, as well as needing to use a wheelchair for much of the time.

He said: “At first, I found it hard to communicate with staff and relied on one-to-one care and equipment for nearly all tasks.

“I had been homeless before moving to Hilltop so arrived with very little. The staff made me feel welcome and supported me with furnishing my flat, as well as getting new clothes and bed linen.”

Over the next few months Paul rehabilitated himself with the support of the Hilltop team, improving both his speech and physical ability.

He slowly built up his confidence and has begun to venture into the town centre on his own. Paul commented: “It feels great to be independent again. I know the team are waiting to greet me home, and that I can call them if I get worried or confused.”

Today, Paul has also started to master a range of new skills, including cooking, cleaning and managing his own money. He’s discovered a new love of gardening and takes some responsibility in looking after the service’s communal garden.

Paul said: “The staff are here when I need a chat and I often sit with them to talk about how my week has been. My independence is so important to me and here at Hilltop this is respected.

“I now look forward to what the future holds.”
