Mental Health Life Story: Michelle McLaughlan

16 April 2019
A Warrington woman has told how support from Sanctuary Supported Living helped her overcome difficulties with mental health and gave back her confidence and self-belief.

Before her referral to Old Liverpool Road, a supported housing service in Warrington for people with mental health needs, Michelle McLaughlan was experiencing drug-induced psychosis and in her own words “struggling to cope”.

She said: “I was using amphetamines, had lost parental responsibility for my youngest child and had lost family, friends and myself.”

Support workers at Old Liverpool Road worked with Michelle to draw up a personalised support plan, aimed at improving her mental health and rebuilding her self-confidence.

After spending 13 months at the service, Michelle’s mental health had significantly improved, and she felt confident enough to live independently again.

She now has her own house, where she has regained parental responsibility and guardianship of her son after seven years apart, and has been carrying out volunteer work in a local shop.

Michelle commented: “I don’t think I would have been able to do this without the strength that Sanctuary Supported Living has given me.

“I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support I have received. Sanctuary Supported Living saved me and has become a very big part of my life.

To say thank you, Michelle organised a raffle to win a food hamper, to raise money to help support other clients at Old Liverpool Road.

Michelle continued: “Saying thank you just doesn’t seem enough and I will always be grateful for the support Sanctuary Supported Living has offered me.

“Every member of the team at Old Liverpool Road supported me and they have given me the encouragement and confidence to become who I am today.

“I’ve gained so much as a result. I believe in myself again and I do not allow my mental health to define me anymore.”
