Starts At Home Day 2019: Coley Anderson

17 June 2019

Coley Anderson has gone from isolation to having a supportive circle of friends after moving to a Hartlepool service.

Coley Anderson using the on-site gym at Sanctuary Supported Living's Victoria Road scheme in Hartlepool.

The 19-year-old came to Sanctuary Supported Living’s Victoria Road – which offers support and accommodation for young adults aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness – in June 2018.

Coley explained his background: “I had become estranged from my family and didn’t have any friends to turn to for support. I live with learning difficulties and possibly an undiagnosed learning disability, so it can be difficult for me to deal with any issues I’m having.”

Since moving in, Coley has discovered a new lease of life. He uses the on-site gym and games room, takes part in table tennis tournaments with other residents and swims with a friend at a local pool.

He is back in touch with some of his family and is planning a holiday with them. His ultimate goal is to become a chef and take part in some work experience in the kitchen of a Sanctuary Care home.

Coley said: “Things are looking really positive for me. Before I lived at Victoria Road, I never went out and I didn’t have any friends. Now, I’ve made friends with other residents and I get on well with everyone.

“I’m settled and I’ve become independent since being here. I have a good laugh with my key worker, I can speak to her about anything and I’m happy with how the staff support me.”
