A Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL) service for homeless people in Southend is to start offering a preventative mediation service as part of its renewed contract.

Southend Homeless Project will be offering the service following its renewal by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council at the start of the year, in addition to its existing supported housing properties in the area.

The new mediation service, which will initially provide individuals with nine hours of support a week, aims to resolve disputes between young people and their family members.

SSL local service manager Melanie Diji said: “We’re delighted to continue our work with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to help those experiencing homelessness move on to independent accommodation.

"Our new mediation service will be a key tool in keeping homelessness down while the supported housing operating under our service continues to provide accommodation for those preparing to move on to independent living."

The service will be introducing a focus on addressing the emotional resilience of its clients through reducing isolation, building social networks and encouraging a routine of positive behaviours such as attending college or volunteering.

The updated contract will also see the appointment of a new apprentice role that will give one young person experience of working at the service.
