Supported housing residents in Wandsworth have been getting to grips with the online world thanks to a digital training course.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) John Pounds House has been hosting the sessions for a group of its residents, who have mental health needs, as part of the Sanctuary Online initiative, which runs in partnership with training provider We Are Digital.

Tutors from We Are Digital worked with residents to help them understand how to use the Internet on the digital devices most familiar to them, whether PC, laptop, phone or tablet.

As a result, residents have gained a better understanding of how to use these devices to prepare their CV, apply for jobs or more everyday usage like transferring music and other files between devices.

Many residents at John Pounds House have had limited exposure to the Internet, owing to limited financial means. This can be compounded by a sense of intimidation when attempting to use a public access terminal in a venue like a library.

The We Are Digital sessions have instead provided them with a relaxed, comfortable setting in which to learn.

One resident said: "The course has been really worth my while. I was shown how to prepare a CV, which has been really useful as I would like to start looking for employment."

National figures show that 12.6 million people lacked the digital skills necessary to access the Internet in 2016.

SSL local service manager Gail Hall added: “The Sanctuary Online initiative has helped our residents develop the skills they need to access training and employment opportunities, as well as the resources of the wider Internet which will benefit them in the future.”

Sanctuary Online aims to train around 600 residents across the country and improve their digital skills so they can take advantage of the online world. As part of the programme, there is also a City and Guilds qualification available for residents who want to use the training to improve their employability skills.

Courses are open to Sanctuary residents of all ages and skill levels. To book a session at your home, text Sanctuary to 07537 416 944, call 03333 442 561 or email sanctuary@we-are-digital.co.uk.
