Mental health residents thrive with garden projects

16 May 2017

Supported housing residents in the Wirral are taking their garden in a new direction with a personal touch; a hand-crafted novelty signpost.

Residents thrive with gardening projects

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Seabank Road, in Wallasey, which provides accommodation for people with mental health needs, has been hosting various projects in its garden since 2005, when residents and staff first tackled its overgrown shrubs.

Every year since, something new is added to the garden, with residents choosing new features and working on the installation and general upkeep of the garden themselves, such as Stephen, who built a summer house, and Eric, who tends to the plants. This year residents have made benches and window boxes to brighten up the garden.

The latest addition to their garden project is a signpost pointing to multiple locales around the world including India, Spain and Rotterdam, with each destination chosen by a resident.

Work on the signpost finished in time to coincide with Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), which ran from 8 to 14 May.

This year’s MHAW theme was ‘Surviving or Thriving?’ which aims to explore how people can help themselves, or be supported, to thrive through good mental health.

Project worker Ian Blakeley, who has been assisting residents with the works, said: “Our residents have loved working on the garden; it’s brought them closer together and has given them a sense of pride as their efforts pay off.

Our residents play a key role in the development of the service, helping shape events and activities – being able to see the service physically change as a result of this is a wonderful confidence boost for them.
