Young people’s walk gives sense of well-being

Young people from a supported housing scheme in Bexhill have been taking the mental health debate outdoors by holding a wellbeing walk.

Residents from Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) London Road service, which provides accommodation for people aged 16-25 at risk, walked six miles for Mental Health Awareness Week (MHAW), which ran from 8 to 14 May.

On a route that took them from the Del A Warr Pavilion to Hastings Pier, the walk provided residents with a chance to socialise in a relaxed atmosphere. It brought many residents closer together and encouraged one to make new friends for the first time since her arrival at the service.

Project worker Frith Lawson-Johnson, who organised the event with residents, said: “Our residents receive personalised care and support tailored to their individual needs. In the case of London Road, this can include mental health needs like depression and anxiety, emphasising why it’s so important to take part in activities like this, which provide an avenue for discussion.

“Halfway through the walk, our residents said how much they enjoyed it and that they’d love to do more things like this in the future. It’s already made the world of difference to one of our residents by encouraging her to open up and expand her social network, so it’s been a fantastic success all round.”

This year’s MHAW theme was ‘Surviving or Thriving?’, which aimed to explore how people can help themselves, or be supported, to thrive through good mental health.
