Peter celebrates a decade of green fingers

A Middlesbrough man has shared his story about how 10 years of volunteer work at a local museum has helped him increase his independence.

Peter celebrates decade of volunteer work

Peter Bushby, 45, is a resident of Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Roxby Avenue, which provides supported housing for people with learning disabilities.

For six hours a week, Peter attends to the grounds of the museum, performing caretaking duties including maintenance, sweeping and emptying waste bins.

It’s a role he’s undertaken for the past 10 years, since before he first moved to the SSL service – and one that’s afforded him a great deal of enjoyment and self-confidence.

SSL deputy local service manager Helen Simpson said: “Wherever we can, we will help our residents to develop the skills they need to live independently. When Peter first came to us, he did require a bit of support adjusting to new bus routes to get to work, but after that it was business as usual in the job he loves.

“He’s got such a passion for gardening and it shows – so much so he even has his own greenhouse at home which he tends to devotedly.”

Joanne Hodgson, who supervises Peter at the museum, added: “Every time I see Peter, he is always working hard.

“He’s been here for years now and always puts a good shift in, but it’s clear how much he enjoys it here; he is very outgoing and chatty to others, telling them what he does and about his plans!”
