Care home staff bring the beach to Alan

An Aylesbury care home resident who was too unwell to holiday in Blackpool had the beach brought to him, following efforts by care home staff.

Alan Jefferson is a resident of Sanctuary Supported Living’s Pennefather Court on Croft Road, which provides residential care for people with disabilities.

When Alan couldn’t join fellow residents on what would have been his first holiday with them because of illness, staff were determined to stop him missing out and sourced a number of props to bring the holiday to Pennefather Court.

As well as coating the ground with a generous helping of sand to make a “beach”, staff produced candyfloss and cocktails for Alan and other residents to enjoy, while the home’s cook prepared fish and chips for an authentic Blackpool supper.

Alan and friends also entertained themselves with games of Hook The Duck and posing in face-in-the-hole boards. They also enjoyed sticks of rock brought back from the real Blackpool by residents who made the trip.

Activities co-ordinator Helena Piper said: “Alan had already been scheduled to travel on the holiday when we received his diagnosis and his doctor advised us he wouldn’t be able to travel.

“Our residents play a key role in the development of their service, helping to shape events and activities – so it’s important to make sure we’re helping them take part in the activities that matter to them.

“Alan is a quiet chap of few words, but the expression on his face throughout the day said it all; he had an amazing time and thanked the staff for enabling him to have the experience.”
