Get Online Week - Arfan's story

3 October 2017

Supported housing resident Arfan Molazam has discovered a new-found interest in computers thanks to a digital training course.

Arfan, a resident at Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Cleves Road service, in East Ham, previously had very few digital skills and limited knowledge of computers.

But after taking part in a series of weekly tutorial sessions as part of the Sanctuary Online initiative that is no longer the case - and the digital world now plays an important role in Arfan’s life.

The training sessions, delivered by tutors from partner We Are Digital, helped residents understand how to use the internet on digital devices most familiar to them – whether phones, tablets, laptops or PCs.

Arfan gained so much digital confidence and motivation from the training that he has now purchased his own computer and had broadband installed at home, which he uses to access the internet independently and without any support.

I had limited knowledge of IT before taking the Sanctuary Online training. Now I feel much more confident, after learning skills such as how to use a computer and how to set up an email address.

SSL local service manager, Joyce Baker, said: “Our residents enjoyed the training and it has been very beneficial, offering them the chance to learn and develop new skills and access new opportunities.”
