A residential care home for people with learning disabilities in Stoke-on-Trent has been rated ‘Good’ by the industry regulator for providing residents with ‘maximum choice and control of their lives’.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Eastgate, in Stoke-on-Trent, was recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for enabling people with autism or learning disabilities to live ‘as ordinary a life as any citizen’ following an unannounced inspection.

SSL works with residents to help them develop the skills they need to live as independently as possible. The report noted a number of ways residents were supported to be independent, including preparing their own meals, choosing what to eat and receiving support from staff to get a bus pass and use public transport.

Residents’ achievements were also noted – such as photos of Eastgate resident and Special Olympics athlete James Noble with his medals on the wall – while the service’s implementation of hospital passports ensured residents’ needs could be met consistently even outside of Eastgate.

One resident said: “I do my own laundry and I make my own meals with help from staff when I need it.”

Another added: “Staff help me when I need them too. There is always someone about. [Staff member's name] is coming in today so that I can go out and staff take me on holiday too.”

SSL local service manager Gary Tideswell said: “Personalisation is integral to the kind of care we deliver at Eastgate so it’s very heartening to see CQC inspectors recognise this in the report.

“We will continue to look for new ways and best practice approaches to provide our residents with as much high-quality care and independence as possible.”
