An Ipswich nursing home has received a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for its support of personal choices, and assistance to maintain good health and diet.

CQC inspectors conducted an unannounced inspection to Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Sidegate Lane, which provides nursing care for 24 adults with mental health needs.

One CQC inspector was accompanied by an ‘expert by experience’ – an individual with personal experience of using or caring for somebody using a similar kind of service – during the visit.

The report noted that individuals were provided with personalised care that not only respected their individual choices, but saw staff working with other agencies, such as occupational therapists and GPs, to ensure reports and recommendations were shared with them, keeping residents’ care consistent.

One relative of a resident said: “Staff are lovely: if we ask them to do anything, they will always accommodate us. [Family member] loves the interaction with staff, [their] face lights up.”

The report also drew attention to supporting residents’ dignity when delivering care, such as through approaches to washing and hygiene.

One resident said: “The staff wash me in bed, they are lovely they are gentle and kind.”

Another added: “They always ask me if I want a hand with washing, but I manage myself.”

Nursing home manager Jo Singleton said: “This ‘Good’ rating is testament to the team at Sidegate Lane, who work hard to deliver high-quality care to residents while respecting their own personal choices and dignity.
