First inspection success for Birkenhead home

11 September 2018

A Birkenhead respite service for adults with learning or physical disabilities has received a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) at its first inspection.

Sanctuary Supported Living's Tollemache Road

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Tollemache Road, which provides short-stay care and accommodation for up to 10 adults, was commended by the CQC for its support of personal choices and commitment to safety.

The report noted that individuals they had spoken to at the service, including residents, family and friends, felt safe and had no worries or concerns. Residents had call bells in their rooms to gain staff attention if needed, as well as assistive technology such as sensor mats.

One relative said: “We are able to go away and know [person] is in safe hands.”

Also highlighted was the fact that residents were supported to make as many choices for themselves as possible, with person-centred support plans including preferences for personal care and how they like to spend their social time.

The report stated that staff played a key role in the success of the service: “The staff were friendly, welcoming and we observed good relationships were maintained with people living in the home and a kind and respectful approach towards people’s care.

“The manager continued to be a visible presence in and about the home and it was obvious that she knew the people who lived in the home well.”

A resident’s relative commented: “The staff really make it, they’re great.”

Another added: “We get to know everything, they talk to us all the time.”

SSL’s deputy local service manager, Sarah O’Dowd, said: “We are currently SSL’s only respite service and we are all thrilled to receive a ‘Good’ rating from the CQC. As the report noted, the staff go above and beyond to make Tollemache Road a friendly and welcoming place, and I feel we’ve created a real ‘home from home’.

“I look forward to the team continuing to pull together over the next few years to maintain our high standard of care.”
