Telford MP visits green fingered residents

21 September 2018

Telford MP Lucy Allan has visited Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL) residents in the town to learn more about the personalised support they receive.

Lucy Allan MP meets with Alex Marshall, Yvonne Crinean and Wendy France

Ms Allan visited SSL’s Oleander House, which provides supported accommodation for people with learning disabilities, and spoke with residents and staff to hear about the supported housing model.

The visit comes amid the National Housing Federation’s Starts At Home campaign, which aims to champion the value of supported housing services.

SSL is supporting the campaign through case studies highlighting its benefits and events showcasing its positive impact on individuals and communities across the country.

Now in its third year, the campaign celebrates the help hundreds of thousands of vulnerable people receive to gain their independence and confidence through supported housing.

During Ms Allan’s visit, the MP explored the service’s nautically themed communal garden and was introduced to resident Simon Hill, who won the Regional prize for the Individual Garden category in SSL’s internal Ready, Steady Grow gardening competition.

She also got the chance to speak with parents of some of the residents, who told of how they had an active role in the delivery of the support for those closest to them.

Residents at Oleander House and other SSL services play a key role in the development of their service, helping to shape events and activities.

SSL area service manager Alex Marshall, who met with Ms Allan on the day, said: “We appreciate Ms Allan taking the time out of her schedule to visit our residents and learn more about the personalised support they receive and how it can change their lives.”

Lucy Allan MP said: “Oleander House provides fantastic supported living for adults with learning difficulties or brain injuries.

“It was a pleasure to meet residents, their relatives and carers who are passionate about making lives better, giving residents independence, quality of life and the support they need.”
