A knock-out visit from Olympian for Darlington residents

21 December 2018

Residents from a Darlington supported housing service have been getting motivated to follow their dreams, thanks to a visit from a local Olympian.

Staff and residents with Savannah Marshall

The staff and residents from Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Ashfield Court and Station Road services – which both support adults with mental health needs and learning difficulties – were treated to a talk by Hartlepool-born boxer Savannah Marshall, who fought at the Olympics in both London and Rio.

Savannah is also the current World Boxing Association Inter-Continental female Super Middleweight champion, and brought along her championship belt for the residents to look at.

The 27-year-old boxer spent time with residents at both locations, talking about her background and how she got to where she is today, and her commitment to constantly improving herself.

Ian Davison, SSL’s local service manager, said: “The residents were very excited for Savannah’s visit and to spend some time with a local heroine. They got so much out of her talk and were really motivated to see how they could replicate her success in their own lives.

“I’d like to thank Savannah for coming along to see us; it was a wonderful morning for all of our residents.”

Savannah Marshall commented: “As a local myself, it was fantastic to go along to SSL’s services in Darlington and talk to the residents about competing for Team GB at the Olympics and participating in world championships.

“With commitment and perseverance, anyone can achieve their dreams, and I hope the residents can take inspiration from my story.”

I’d like to thank Savannah for coming along to see us; it was a wonderful morning for all of our residents.
