Jenny’s Blog 5: May 2019

13 May 2019

Now living independently, Jenny Doyle is a former Sanctuary Supported Living resident from Norman Russell House in Milton Keynes. She has been blogging about her journey with mental ill-health for the last few months. Jenny has written this final instalment to mark Mental Health Awareness Week 2019.

I have now moved into my new flat, where I live independently with a Personal Assistant in place to support me when I need help. I feel I am settling in well.

As I am considered an ‘expert by experience’, I have been asked by senior management at Sanctuary Supported Living to assist with the process of auditing its services. This will involve me visiting different services and providing feedback. I look forward to supporting with this.

As it’s Mental Health Awareness Week, I decided to write about Body Image for my final blog as it’s this year’s theme.

But before I share some tips and quotes that have helped me maintain a positive body image I thought I’d let you know another tip – when I have felt low and needed a focus writing this blog has helped.

Here are my top tips and quotes for maintaining a positive body image.

  1. Appreciate all that your body can do.
  2. Remind yourself that true beauty isn’t simply skin deep.
  3. Look at yourself as a whole person.
  4. Surround yourself with positive people.
  5. Every piece of you is a burst of beautiful
  6. Loving yourself is the greatest revolution.
  7. When you discover your self-worth you will lose interest in anyone who doesn’t see it.
  8. Dear body, you were never a problem. There is nothing wrong with your size, your curves, your scars, your flaws, your stretch marks or you. It’s not your job to look pretty. You’re good enough already.

All that is left for me to say now is thank you for reading my blog posts. I hope that, just like me you too will recover from poor mental health, but remember it is not a race.
