A Sanctuary Supported Living resident from Hartlepool is hoping to follow his dream of becoming a sports coach after taking part in the Get on Track programme.

The initiative is a partnership between Sanctuary Supported Living and the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust and has involved residents from the Victoria Road, Norton Road and St James House schemes in the town.

Mentored by former Olympic swimmer James Kirton and Jenny Wallwork, who was one of England’s leading badminton players, they have taken part in sessions to promote work-related skills and teamwork.

Curtis Duke has attended every session and his confidence has significantly increased to the extent he is now applying for apprenticeships as a sports coach with local schools.

He said: “Once I heard about the Get on Track programme I couldn’t wait to sign up for it. I give every session 100 per cent and I love all of the activities.

“I have really enjoyed working with Jenny and James, they are really inspiring people as they are just like me and look what they have achieved. Sport is my passion in life and to do this as a career would be amazing.”

Local service manager Sonya Ellerton commented: “I have seen such an improvement with Curtis since the programme started, he has been getting up early and he is more positive and motivated.

“Before the programme started Curtis did not really engage with others but since then he has come on leaps and bounds and got involved with lots of other activities within the service and with other residents.”
