The gardens at a supported living service in Bury St Edmunds have been spruced up for summer thanks to the help of students on the National Citizen Service (NCS) programme.

A team of 15 volunteers, aged 15 to 17, spent four days planting flowers, clearing overgrown areas and restocking bird feeders at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Hilltop House, which supports adults with physical disabilities.

The students took time out to socialise with residents and also organised quizzes and games during their time at the service.

Local Service Manager, Emma Warren, said: “It was great to have such positive young energy around the building, and the young people did a really good job with the gardens.

“The social interactions with new people can be challenging for some residents, especially those with communication difficulties, but this was soon overcome.”

One resident, Anthony, commented: “The volunteers made the gardens look pretty and they were very nice to talk to.”

Sanctuary Supported Living worked in partnership with the NCS, which gives young people the opportunity to get involved with projects that make a difference in the community.

Before carrying out the work, the students met with residents to discuss how they could make a positive change at the service during their visit.

Emma added: “Staff and residents here at Hilltop House would like to thank the NCS team for choosing us for their project and we hope to see them again in the future.”
