Kent garden revamp at homeless service

23 October 2019

Young people from a Kent homelessness service are celebrating having a revamped garden.

Staff and residents with Walker Construction in their refurbished garden.

Residents at Sanctuary Supported Living’s East Kent Young People’s services, which supports people aged 16-21 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, have been working with a local organisation to refurbish their outdoor space.

The young people joined up with staff from Walker Construction to transform their garden area, with improvements including new seating created from old wooden pallets, a graffiti art wall and the addition of contemporary metal planters.

New residents will be encouraged to work with staff and add their own individual touches, to make them feel included in the garden transformation and the maintenance of their home.

Resident Freya Windeatt commented: “I think I speak for all of us when I say what a sense of achievement we got from the project. As well as the finished garden looking incredible, we all really enjoyed working together on the improvements.”

Sanctuary Supported Living’s peer support coordinator for East Kent, Anni Wilson, added: “Having an informal place to interact with each other is important for groups of any age, but particularly so for young people, and the garden really ticks that box for them.

“The residents thrived in taking responsibility for the project and built up invaluable new skills. It was a real team effort, with residents taking the lead right from the planning stages.

“I’d like to give a special thanks to former project worker Donna Samuels, who worked tirelessly to set up the initial partnership with Walker Construction.”
