Staff and residents from Sanctuary Supported Living’s Hilltop House were ecstatic after their service came top in the Putting People First / Personalisation category, at the East regional finals of the Great British Care Awards.

The service, which supports adults with a range of physical disabilities, was commended for the creative ways in which residents are involved in all aspects of their care and support.

Staff at Hilltop House work with residents on a variety of innovative projects, including a wheelchair dance class, teaming up with local National Citizen Service volunteers to revamp the garden according to residents’ wishes, and organising the ‘Hilltop Olympics’ to mark their own Disability Awareness Month.

All new staff members also spend a day in a wheelchair to experience life from another perspective, enabling them to empathise with day-to-day difficulties faced by the residents.

Emma Warren, Sanctuary Supported Living’s local service manager at Hilltop House, said: “When Hilltop House was named as the winner the cheers almost raised the roof! We are all absolutely delighted.

“I am so very proud of the whole team. The ethos here at Hilltop is to put the residents first in every way, and the fact that we have been recognised for just that is incredible.”

The service will now go forward to the national finals of the Great British Care Awards, which will take place next year.
