Oleander House celebrates ‘Good’ rating from the CQC

19 December 2019

A Telford supported living service for adults with learning disabilities has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Residents and staff at Oleander House give thumbs up to ‘Good’ rating.

The CQC’s report praised staff at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Oleander House for supporting residents to ‘live as full a life as possible’ and for ensuring that they always had choice, control and independence.

Inspectors considered whether Oleander House was safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led, and rated the service as ‘Good’ in all areas. During the inspection, they saw many positive interactions between residents and staff, including residents sharing jokes and laughing with staff. Staff supported and encouraged residents to engage with others in a ‘friendly and empowering way, with the use of appropriate humour’, and residents responded positively to it.

In partnership with the nearby Rose Manor retirement living service (also run and owned by Sanctuary), Oleander House’s seaside-themed garden won the ‘Best Community Garden’ category in Sanctuary Supported Living’s national gardening competition, Ready Steady Grow, in 2018.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s Local Service Manager, Wendy France, said: “We are delighted to have received a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission.

“Our staff work hard to provide high-quality care and support to residents, ensuring that they can make decisions about their own lives and live as independently as possible, and we’re so pleased that this has been recognised by the CQC.”

The report highlighted stated that staff supported residents to live independently by offering choices and using different communication styles, ensuring that residents were able to make decisions for themselves as much as possible.

Also highlighted in the report was the fact that residents were supported to develop and maintain social relationships and take part in individual and communal activities such as games, swimming and gardening.

We are delighted to have received a ‘Good’ rating from the Care Quality Commission.
