Shaftesbury Court in Manor Close, which provides residential care and support for adults with learning and physical disabilities, reopened its doors this week following a £2.8million remodelling programme which saw both staff and residents make a temporary move to another site in Devizes.

Run by Sanctuary Supported Living, the site, which is close to Southwick Country Park, has already welcomed back a number of residents who are making themselves at home in the new state-of-the-art building with integrated technology.

Residents were invited to choose their own wallpaper, bathroom tiles, curtains and contributed their ideas for all the communal spaces.

The building has been completely redesigned to create a larger living space and bedrooms with level access throughout.

The new, fully adapted kitchens include rise/fall kitchen units which allow residents to get involved in cooking and enjoy new sensory experiences.

The fully adapted en-suite bathrooms have a new track and hoist system so that personal care is straightforward and maintain independence in their home.

Local Service Manager, Samantha McCrindle said: “We’re delighted to be back in Trowbridge and at the heart of a community we love. It’s taken two years from planning to execution, but we now have a beautiful new, homely building for our residents to enjoy.”

Covid restrictions have meant that the residents have made the move back without friends and family, but a team of volunteers helped set the building up beforehand and brought over equipment and boxes.

Samantha continued: “The staff have all worked wonders preparing people for the move – many of them going out of their way to make sure that our residents have what they want for their new rooms."

The Shaftesbury Court team has previously worked with Trowbridge College providing student placements, which has led to recruiting many of their staff and this is something they hope to resume when it’s safe to do so. They’re also now actively recruiting for care and support assistants to join their team.
