Independence and staff training behind care service's Good CQC report

A Suffolk service offering domiciliary care for disabled adults has been rated “Good” by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in its latest report.

Inspected and rated as Good by the CQCAvalon Court was rated ‘Good’ for its compassionate approach by the CQC.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s Avalon Court, in Ipswich, was praised for its safeguarding of clients, its staff training and development, promotion of independence and open culture.

Inspectors from the CQC credited the service – which provides 14 self-contained apartments with a lounge, balcony, bedroom with overhead hoist, wet room and wheelchair bay – for seeking consent before providing care, treating residents with respect and involving them in decisions about their care and support.

One resident said: “They [care workers] listen to how I want to be supported, I definitely think they make sure my dignity is respected.”

Another added: “They [care workers] never take over. I would not like that. They ask me first what I can do on the day.”

Equal care was found to have been taken with the staff. The report cited ‘robust’ recruitment and character check systems in place, with the workers given the chance to do ‘shadow shifts’ with more experienced colleagues and receive training in safeguarding, managing challenging behaviours, administering medicine and more.

One care worker told the CQC: “We do behaviours training face to face and on the job; people's behaviours are individual to them so we talk about what works. I know they [management] are looking into doing sign language, one [care worker] has done it.”

The service’s culture was summarised in the report as ‘open and empowering’, with residents’ and care workers’ views “valued and acted upon to improve the service”.
