13 December 2018

Staff from a Mansfield care home are celebrating after their service received an ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

Owned and managed by Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL), Corner House residential care home – which provides care and support for 11 adults with learning disabilities – received the accolade following the CQC’s inspection commending the home’s commitment to safety and personalisation.

Representing SSL’s first CQC ‘Outstanding’ rating, the report commented that: “Corner House is led by an exceptional registered manager who has the wellbeing of all people at heart. They strive to provide people with the highest possible outcomes; people thrive at Corner House.”

CQC officials noted how people were supported to feel safe and a part of their community. One resident said: “They [staff] always make me feel safe, I’m so happy here. I’m never upset.”

A relative added: “We have no concerns whatsoever about [family member’s] safety. They are so well looked after and able to flourish there.”

The report said that CQC inspectors were told that staff listened to the residents and helped them to feel reassured, encouraging and supporting them to raise any concerns about their own or other’s safety.

Also highlighted was the person-centred culture at Corner House, with staff supporting residents to lead their lives in a way that enabled them to be as independent as possible.

A relative said: “[Name’s] independence has improved so much since being there, when we get to see them you can see it, their confidence has come on so much.”

The report stated that “people played a full and active role in the decisions relating to their care and support needs,” adding: “People told us staff listened to them and ensured their choices and decisions were acted on.”

SSL’s local service manager, Joanne Hardwick, said: “We are over the moon with our ‘Outstanding’ rating from the CQC, and the fact that it’s also a first for SSL as a whole is really the icing on the cake.

“I am so proud of the whole team and the effort that everyone makes. The key is to recognise that our place of work is our residents’ home, and that everyone deserves to have the same opportunities in life.”

Sara Keetley, Operations Director – SSL, added: “I think I speak for everyone at SSL when I say how immensely proud we are of the whole team. It’s a real testament to the commitment of the staff at Corner House.

“As this is the first CQC ‘Outstanding’ rating for SSL, we now have a great opportunity to learn about what we could look to implement at other services. The team’s achievement really fits with our aim of ensuring quality in all that we do.”
