Extra domestic abuse support during World Cup
Plymouth Domestic Abuse Services (PDAS) is extending its opening hours during England World Cup games.
The Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL) service’s phone line will be open until 9.30 pm on all days England play, bar the game against Panama on Sunday 24 June when it will be open until 3.30 pm.
Research by Lancaster University discovered a 38 per cent increase in domestic abuse incidents on days when England lost during the 2014 World Cup, while even wins and draws led to a 26 per cent increase.
SSL local service manager Katy Fisher said: “There is, unfortunately, a history of increases in domestic abuse during the World Cup and we would like people to know there is help available.
“If you are experiencing – or fearful of – abuse, we are here during the matches to talk about it with you in confidence.”
