Torbay Domestic Abuse Service invited community to come together

20 November 2017

A Torbay support service for victims of domestic abuse is encouraging the community to come together to raise awareness while learning more about the support available.

The first event stats on Saturday 25 November.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Torbay Domestic Abuse Service (TDAS) is hosting a range of events for a local Domestic Abuse Awareness Week, which runs from Saturday 25 November to Friday 1 December.

The week is part of the larger ‘Are You OK?’ campaign, which was established to promote domestic abuse services in the county.

TDAS will use the campaign to speak with the public about the help it provides, including one to one emotional and practical support, safety planning, outreach support, refuge and safe house accommodation, as well as advocacy, legal surgeries and counselling.

The full list of events is as follows:

  • Saturday 25 November
    • 2 pm to 5 pm, Shekinah GROW on Preston Road, Paignton: Free community event organised with organic horticultural project Shekinah GROW, including a barbecue, raffles, hot chocolate, bouncy castle, face painting and crafts.  (Also features a bonfire from 5.30 pm.)
  • Sunday 26 November
    • Weather dependent, Torquay Beach. Integrated Youth Support Service (IYSS) will be joining “Are You OK?” to promote its campaign of the same name by hosting a sand sculpture by Torbay ‘sandman’ artist Geoffrey Ward.
  • Tuesday 28 November
    • 10 am to 3 pm, Paignton Library, Station Lane. TDAS advisers and volunteers will be joining the IYSS to offer information about the services they provide.
  • Wednesday 29 November
    • 10 am to 2 pm, Torquay’s Union Square. The TDAS Light Group, advisers and volunteers, will be offering information, as well as free pre-painted ‘stones’ featuring contact details for the service.
  • Thursday 30 November
    • TDAS invites people and individuals to join them in a “Wear Purple to Work” day, to raise awareness of abuse for staff and employers.
  • Friday 1 December
    • 10 am The Boathouse, Preston Beach. Members of the public are invited to join in with a domestic abuse awareness-raising walk from the Boathouse to Princess Theatre in Torquay and back. The walk will start at 10 am and all are welcome to join, including children in pushchairs and dogs.

SSL local service manager Tina Cross said: “Our local Domestic Abuse Awareness Week is a big event in our calendar as it allows us to really get the word out about the support our service offers.

“We provide ways to discuss domestic abuse safely and confidentially and we’d encourage anyone – even those who’d just like to learn more about who we are and what we do – to join us on any of the days.”
