The team from Sanctuary Supported Living’s Victoria Road, which supports young people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, are in the running for a grant of up to £2,000 through Tesco’s Bags of Help scheme.

Bags of Help sees community projects around the country receive funding awards, with Tesco shoppers voting in-store for their choice of three initiatives.

Victoria Road staff are hoping to get the most votes to win the top prize of £2,000, which will be used to enhance the service’s community garden.

The outside space has already been transformed to include the addition of eye-catching pallet garden furniture, colourful artwork on the walls and a brand new barbecue area.

The Bags of Help funding will go towards decking, lighting and plants, as well as the installation of a heat lamp to allow the garden to be used in the spring and autumn months.

“Whatever amount we secure, whether it’s £500, £1,000 or £2,000, we’ll be delighted to have funding towards improving the garden even more, but of course we would like to win the first prize.”

The garden plays an invaluable part in boosting our residents’ mental health through providing an area to socialise with each other and talk to staff, and allowing them to take ownership of the garden refurbishment project.

Shoppers can vote for Victoria Road until the end of March at Tesco stores around Hartlepool:

  • Tesco Express, Throston Grange.
  • Tesco Express, Catcote Road.
  • Tesco Extra, Belle Vue Way.

The Tesco Bags of Help scheme is administered by Groundwork.
