Colchester residents get in the saddle for World Suicide Prevention Month

21 October 2020

Residents and staff from Sanctuary Supported Living’s Chinook and Queen Elizabeth Way homelessness services in Colchester took part in around the world cycle challenge to mark World Suicide Prevention Month.

Resident Harry cycles on the excercise bike outdoors with Lauren timing his ride.

Taking turns on a static bike, they recorded a total of 262 miles as part of the International Association for Suicide Prevention’s Cycle Around the Globe initiative.

Teams and individuals from all over the world took part in the challenge to cycle a combined 24,900 miles – equivalent to the distance around the world. The Sanctuary Supported Living team’s efforts placed them in an impressive 12th position on the overall global team leaderboard.

Almost 800,000 people a year take their own life around the world every year – equivalent to one person every 40 seconds. Cycle Around the Globe aims to increase awareness of suicide prevention and raise funds to support community-based prevention activities in lower and middle income countries.

Lauren Whitehead, Project Worker for Sanctuary Supported Living, said: “Everyone enjoyed taking part in the challenge and it was a great way to support a cause that is very close to our hearts.

“We’re committed to supporting residents and colleagues with their mental health and helping to reduce stigma around talking openly about how we feel. The challenge provided us with a relaxed way to talk about suicide prevention and the support available for those who may need it.”

Sanctuary Supported Living’s Chinook and Queen Elizabeth Way are part of Colchester Homelessness Supported Housing, which provides support for adults aged 18 to 64 who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness.
