It’s a clean sweep for Merchant’s Terrace residents

31 August 2021

Staff and residents at Merchant’s Terrace, a supported housing service for homeless people in King’s Lynn, have been getting into the community spirit and taking action to clear up the local area of litter.

The team at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Merchant’s Terrace, which provides accommodation and personalised support for people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, initially liaised with the Borough Council of King's Lynn & West Norfolk’s clean-up team, to identify problem areas in the streets around the service.

The first clean-up took place on Wednesday 25 August, with the litter collected by residents and staff at Merchant’s Terrace then being safely disposed of by the council’s team.

Suzanne Bell, a Project Worker at Merchant’s Terrace, who coordinated the community clean-up, said: “The idea came from the residents themselves during one of the regular residents’ meetings. They wanting to do something to improve the local community. We currently have an ongoing gardening project, to make improvements to the courtyard and front gardens, and the residents wanted to extend that to the local area”.

We hope this will be the first of many local clean-ups and we’re looking forward to finding more ways for residents to get involved with the local community.

Daniel Fowkes-Grange, Deputy Local Service Manager

Deputy Local Service Manager, Daniel Fowkes-Grange, added: “Many of the people we support have been impacted by complex issues relating to homelessness and we work hard to help them gain the life skills and confidence they need, so that they can move from supported housing and live independently. We hope this will be the first of many local clean-ups and we’re looking forward to finding more ways for residents to get involved with the local community.”
