Team effort transforms outside space for young people

6 July 2021

Young residents at a Sittingbourne supported living service are enjoying a refurbished outside space thanks to the efforts of two local community groups.

A team from Sittingbourne Foodbank and Net Church recently visited Sanctuary Supported Living’s Old Johnson House to give their garden a makeover with newly painted furniture as well as refilling their planters.

The garden at the specialist young people’s service, which provides accommodation and support for 16 to 21-year-olds at risk of homelessness, was transformed two years ago by local firm Walker Construction who kindly built the pallet furniture, which has been a popular area for the residents to relax ever since.

As part of the makeover, the young residents decided to add their own stamp to the garden by creating a colourful graffiti mural on a blank wall and celebrated the revamp with a barbecue.

The residents’ graffiti wall has really finished off the overall look of the outside space and everyone is making the most of it whenever the weather allows.

Paige Russell, Specialist Project Worker, said: “We are so grateful for all the work put in by the team from Sittingbourne Foodbank and Net Church, who have made some amazing improvements. The residents’ graffiti wall has really finished off the overall look of the outside space and everyone is making the most of it whenever the weather allows.”

East Kent Young People Services Local Service Manager, Ebi Ubredi, said: “Old Johnson House is focused on providing short-term accommodation and support for vulnerable young people where they can feel safe and valued. The outside area is an important part of where the young people can hang out. Residents do sometimes have meetings with staff or their social workers, a barbecue, house meeting or just take some time out for themselves”.
