Wheelie generous donation for supported housing residents

26 August 2021

Supported housing residents in Dereham and Costessey are finding it easier to get out and about, thanks to a generous donation from Norfolk police.

Residents at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Dereham Homeless Supported Housing service and Cannell Court in Costessey recently took delivery of 15 unclaimed bikes recovered by the police.

The supported housing services provide short-term accommodation and support for adults who have faced homelessness, or who are at risk of homelessness. Residents asked staff if there was a way they could get bikes, so that they could have transport, improve their health and wellbeing, and increase their independence.

Some of the bikes were in full, working order and simply in need of a puncture repair kit, while others provided the opportunity for a restoration project. Not only has the donation created an opportunity for residents to build relationships with their local police, but also the opportunity to build their skills and confidence as they problem solve, and learn to how to live independently while when working together and restoring the bikes.

The residents are all delighted with the bikes as they represent independence.

Angela Conway, Local Service Manager

Angela Conway, Local Service Manager, said: “I’d like to say a big thank you to Norfolk Police for their generous support in making this project happen. The residents are all delighted with the bikes as they represent independence – giving them an opportunity to more easily explore the local area, as well providing access to a greater range of employment opportunities.”
