Young people in Hartlepool have a new chance for a fresh start

26 January 2018

A supported housing service for young homeless people in Hartlepool has opened its doors as commissioners meet with staff and residents.

In an agreement with Hartlepool Borough Council, Sanctuary Supported Living’s (SSL) Victoria Road is providing supported accommodation for 10 young people aged 16 to 25, as well as more than 40 hours of support a week for other young people in the area.

The service also houses two ‘crash pads’ intended as a short-term measure of housing young people without a permanent residence while their needs are addressed.

A self-contained flat for people/residents with higher needs is also in the final stages of development at the service.

Victoria Road offers residents personalised care and support tailored to their individual needs, following a support plan which focuses on developing their skills and building on their strengths, from budgeting and cooking to finding work and maintaining a tenancy.

At an open event this month, commissioners met with residents and staff to get a feel for how the service has been helping those among the first to move in.

SSL local services manager Sonya Ellerton said: “SSL has a record in delivering services for young people, as well as delivering high quality supported housing in Hartlepool.

“We’re excited to bring that same level of support in helping young people in the town realise their independence.”

Councillor Alan Clark, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Children’s Services Committee, said: “I recently visited the accommodation and met with staff. I was very impressed with what I saw. This initiative is providing a valuable service to young people in need of support in Hartlepool.”
