A village that took a community to create

19 February 2021

Residents from a Felixstowe nursing home can now pay a visit to their very own village, thanks to a community effort on a unique project.

The team at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Montague Road Nursing Home – which provides care and support for adults with mental health needs – came together to create an intricate miniature village in the service’s atrium.

Including detailed houses, a church, a handknitted farm and a village green, the project became a reality thanks to the generosity of the local community who donated their unused dolls’ houses.

Milly Gaskin, Sanctuary Supported Living’s Local Nursing Home Manager, said: “It all started with one dolls’ house – a vintage one we had bought a couple of years ago and which our activities coordinator, Teresa, felt could be the basis for a new display.

“And it’s grown from there! We were blown away by the kindness of our neighbours who gave us so many dolls’ houses. Teresa has masterminded the village and it’s been a real labour of love for everyone.

The residents absolutely adore the village

“The residents absolutely adore the village, it’s so colourful and they love getting involved with setting it up. It’s a really positive addition to our home, especially during lockdown.”

The project is set to continue over the coming months with the seasons being reflected in the village, and residents working on their own miniature rooms to be displayed in other places around the home.
