18 February 2019

Jenny is a resident at Norman Russell House supported housing service in Milton Keynes. Jenny is writing this blog as a way to share her experience of facing mental ill-health and share her journey with others. Jenny’s blog will talk about her feelings at the time, the support she has received and how she is working to improve her mental health. Read Jenny's previous blog.

Resident Jenny Doyle from Norman Russell House

After a lot of thinking I’ve decided this month to reflect on my time so far at Norman Russell House for this blog. As I’ve previously mentioned I moved into Norman Russell House in February 2016. So I have been here for 3 years and in that time I have grown a lot as a person and have also learnt a lot about myself. An example of this is I now don’t beat myself up if I have a down day and have learnt that it’s okay to admit when you are struggling and that no one will judge you for this.

As I start to look to my future I realise that I can achieve anything I want to and that whilst this may take me longer than my friends, family or fellow residents that is fine. Life is not a race. Everyone will get there in their own time.  When I reflect back on my time so far at Norman Russell House I realise how much I have achieved and I’m proud of myself. I guess what I’m trying to say is that although it may be hard to believe you will recover from poor mental health but you will do it at a pace that is right for you.

So until my next blog, I will leave you with these words from Dr. Wayne Dyer that have helped me in the tough times.

“With everything that has happened to you, you can either feel sorry for yourself or treat what has happened as a gift. Everything is either an opportunity to grow or an obstacle to keep you from growing. You get to choose”.
