Love In Doreen’s Eyes as pop legend calls in

9 May 2017

The Magic Was There for one resident of an Ipswich nursing home, who got to meet Irish pop legend Daniel O’Donnell when she was unable to attend his concert.

Doreen Baker, 76, a resident of Sanctuary Supported Living’s Sidegate Lane Nursing Home, which provides care for people with mental health needs, had been unable to secure tickets when the last wheelchair-accessible space for his Ipswich Regent show sold out.

Determined not to let Doreen miss out on seeing her musical idol in person, Sidegate Lane’s specialist nurse manager, Michala Hartley-Brown, contacted O’Donnell’s agent and persuaded the pop legend to take 10 minutes to call in and see her.

Doreen said, "He is so lovely – such a handsome man – his visit really made my day. I’m so grateful to Michala – she’s made my dreams come true."

Doreen, who has a picture of the star next to her bed and listens to his music every night, was granted a private audience when he visited; together the pair talked about previous shows Doreen had attended and where she grew up.

Michala added: “Doreen is someone who has had a lot of emotional challenges throughout her life and needs full support with daily living requirements. When the chance came to do something that would make such a difference, I had to give it a try.

“We deliver personalised care based on a client’s individual needs – though it’s not often that involves the opportunity to introduce them to their musical hero, so this has been a wonderful experience!”

Doreen’s photo may have to give up pride of place at the bedside, however – she has something to remember Daniel by in the form of a new framed photo of his visit taken by Michala herself.
