Pride flags flying high again at Montague Road nursing home

11 June 2021

Residents and staff at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Montague Road nursing home are feeling Proud once more, after the local community stepped in to support them.

The nursing home, which provides nursing care and support for people with mental health needs, regularly supports key cultural awareness days and events. This includes Pride month in June, when both residents and staff are supported to better understand LGBTQ+ history, and to celebrate each person’s individuality and diversity. As part of their Pride celebrations and decorations, staff at the home proudly displayed some of the Pride themed flags from the windows.

However, after the flags and bunting were sadly torn down by an unknown member of the public, Milly Gaskin, Montague Road’s Nursing Home Manager, took to social media to share her dismay.

A local vicar, Andrew, from St John the Baptist church in Felixstowe, then kindly offered to replace them, including a donation of extra flags to cheer up the residents and everyone at Montague Road was delighted to accept.

The support we’ve had from the community in Felixstowe has been overwhelming

Milly said: “We took the opportunity to say let’s be proud and fly a flag for Pride month and make sure everyone understands we provide a safe space for our residents and staff. The support we’ve had from the community in Felixstowe has been overwhelming. We’re very pleased to say that residents haven’t let this negative incident phase them, and our Pride month celebrations will continue with a singing drag queen and a tea party!”
