Young residents from Hartlepool are celebrating after their supported housing service was refurbished thanks to money raised by their local community.

Sanctuary Supported Living’s Victoria Road service – which supports people aged 16 to 25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness – was chosen to benefit through well-known PERi-PERi chicken restaurant Nando’s community project, ahead of the launch of its new restaurant in the town.

The team were thrilled to find out they had been selected and jumped at the offer to have some redecoration carried out by the Nando’s team before lockdown, which included the painting of communal areas and staircases as well as tiling the toilet facilities.

Residents also received a much-needed new dishwasher, a tumble dryer for the laundry room and a garden shed.

Sonya Ellerton, Local Service Manager, said: “We are delighted to benefit from this community initiative and the residents have been enjoying the recent refurbishments. It really has helped to freshen up the decor and lift spirits during this difficult time.”

“We are all looking forward to assembling the shed, and the residents have been busy planning a makeover for the garden area too.”

Following the re-opening of Nando’s Hartlepool, staff and residents will be presented with a cheque from money raised at their restaurant launch event with donations from companies who attended. The manager will work closely with residents and let them plan how they would like to spend the money to benefit all at Victoria Road.
