The theme for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘Kindness’, so staff at Defoe Court in Epsom created care packages for every resident, each containing a personalised selection of health and wellbeing essentials. The care packages consisted of items which were kindly donated by shoppers at the local branch of Savers health and beauty store, on Epsom high street, where there is a collection basket by the tills.

Defoe Court provides accommodation and support for up to 21 young people aged 16 to 25, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, including care leavers and unaccompanied asylum seekers. Residents are supported to build their confidence and develop the skills they need to move on and live independently.

Staff at the service are hoping that generous local people will carry on donating even after Mental Health Awareness Week, so that they can continue to provide residents with much-needed items, such as shampoo, shower gel, sanitary items, deodorant and toothpaste. Basic food items such as tea, coffee and biscuits are also greatly appreciated.

Local Service Manager, Neil Hall, said: “We’re so grateful to the staff and shoppers at Savers for their support, particularly during Mental Health Awareness Week, with its theme of ‘Kindness’. Many of our residents have very limited income due to their age, so affording basic items that many of us take for granted, such as shampoo and toothpaste, can be a source of stress and anxiety. These kind and thoughtful donations will make a big difference to them.”
