PDAS Case Study: Anne's story

Anne*, 22, has been staying at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Plymouth Refuge for nearly two months after escaping from the house she shared with her ex-partner.

A woman in distress

Leaving at the most extreme point of a relationship that had become more and more destructive to the point of sexual abuse and rape, she had been held against her will in a room for 72 hours.

The episode was the tipping point that convinced Anne to seek support after living with other, more subtle, forms of abuse in the relationship for much longer.

Anne said: “It started off gradually, I didn’t see the signs.

“I’d been in the relationship for four years. It started off brilliantly, but then it became controlling.”

In addition to insisting Anne transfer any money she earned over to him to manage, her ex-partner would also exercise emotional abuse, trying to convince her that family members didn’t want to see her.

She added: “I wasn’t aware of how many kinds of abuse there are.

“Looking back, I could see how he was abusing me not just physically and sexually, but emotionally and financially too.”

At Plymouth Refuge, Anne received ongoing support from Plymouth Domestic Abuse Services (PDAS) and partner agencies, such as Shelter.

She said: “I can now live my life how I want to. I want to support my family but I can’t be a proper mum while living with abuse.

“I think there needs to be a lot more out there for people to recognise the signs. I still didn’t know what kinds of abuse there were.

“I’d say to people: try to get out of the situation as soon as possible – the longer you stay in that situation, the worse it will get. It doesn’t matter how small the abuse is, there is never an excuse and no one should have to put up with it.”
