George

This year is a very special year for George Stavrou, a resident at Chesterfield Gardens in London, which provides residential care and support for a range of mental health needs and learning disabilities.

After recently turning 80, staff and fellow residents helped George celebrate in style by organising balloons and a personalised cake for everyone at the service to enjoy a slice of.

Birthday well wishes also came from the wider community, where George has formed friendships with local shopkeepers, restaurant owners and churchgoers on his daily walks.

Local Service Manager, Lindi Urubusi, said: “Although George isn’t always able to communicate verbally, he lives a very full and rich life. He cleans, does his own laundry, is very active in his herb garden, and helps prepare the roast dinners on a Sunday. He appears to be happy here and when he’s out, he will say ‘home’ when he wants to return.”

George has another important occasion worth celebrating in April - the thirtieth anniversary of his move to Chesterfield Gardens. Originally from Cyprus, George moved to the UK to stay with his older sister in the early 90s. After being diagnosed with meningitis at a young age, the effects of George’s life-threatening condition meant he needed full-time care and support. This is where George’s local authority stepped in and contacted Sanctuary Supported Living with the goal of finding him long-term accommodation where his unique personal needs would be met, and his personality could shine.

George’s goal is to remain healthy and fit, and our aim is to continue to support him to live a long life doing the things he wants to do.

Lindi added: “George’s goal is to remain healthy and fit, and our aim is to continue to support him to live a long life doing the things he wants to do.”
