Laura Cartwright credits the support provided at her Sanctuary Supported Living service as the reason she’s been able to move on to live independently.

The now 32-year-old came to Wigan Road in Bolton, a supported housing service for people with mental health issues, in 2017. She said: “When I arrived I was really nervous and needed support with caring for myself and looking after my home.”

With the help of her support worker, Laura’s self-confidence gradually improved, and her bespoke care package meant she could get out and about more.

“I really appreciated having someone to talk to about things,” Laura said. “My worker at Sanctuary Supported Living was happy to support me in the way that I wanted.”

Eventually, Laura’s self-confidence improved so much that she enrolled on a creative writing course and she felt able to look after herself more independently.

Laura commented: “I became more and more involved with life at the service, actually helping out in staff interviews, which was a huge step for me and becoming the health and safety rep at the service which I really enjoyed.”

Today, Laura is engaged, living with her fiancé, and studying for online qualifications. She said: “I feel so much more confident in my abilities and that I’ve achieved some of my life goals.

“Sanctuary Supported Living staff taught me to plan things and take small steps, and this helps me not to get too overwhelmed. The support from the team was fantastic, they helped me through some tough times."
