Residents in Birkenhead have celebrated the launch of a brand-new learning disability service with an official opening event.
Whilst Sanctuary Supported Living’s Cardigan House, which provides care and support for adults with a range of learning disabilities, opened in October of last year after an investment of £590,000, they were unable to honour the occasion due to covid restrictions.
The theme of the open day was Independence Day, specially chosen by residents who have moved out of their family homes and excited to celebrate their own, newly found independence. With the support of Cardigan House, residents can look forward to developing their daily living skills and living as independently as possible.
The service, which accepts referrals from Wirral Council, was attended by Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, Cllr Jerry Williams and his wife, Irene, as well as staff, residents, and Operations Director of Sanctuary Supported Living, Sara Keetley.
The open day commenced with a drinks’ reception and grand tour before the ribbon cutting ceremony.

Operations Director of Sanctuary Supported Living, Sara Keetley, said: “By offering tailored care and support for residents, we can help them to live more independently, and to flourish and thrive. I’m pleased that the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress could join us at Cardigan House to officially open our new learning disability service. I hope they had a great time and learned a lot about what we do.”
Deputy Mayor, Jerry Williams, added: “It was a delightful experience for the Deputy Mayoress and I to visit Cardigan House yesterday and see the new facilities. We appreciate the importance of independent living through our life experiences. Our very best wishes and regards for the future to everyone involved.”
