Peter Travers

A Kent man who had been experiencing mental health and financial problems has turned his fortunes around thanks to assistance from Sanctuary Supported Living (SSL).

When his mental health was at its lowest, Peter Travers, 64, had no money and increasing debt after running into difficulties claiming benefit payments and building up rent and utility arrears.

When Peter, who has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, was first referred to project worker Sarah Moore, at SSL’s Kent Floating Support, the sense of being overwhelmed had led Peter to threaten to take his life as he struggled to come to terms with the situation.

Recognising the issues, Sarah referred Peter to the local mental health team and she was able to provide her support by going through the history of Peter’s financial situation to understand the issues around his claim for benefits.

As a result, Peter was awarded a backdated Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), while Sarah has been able to help Peter place a further claim for housing benefit and council tax support.

The backdated payment has meant that Peter was able to fully clear his arrears and plan for the future; he’s now planning to apply for supported accommodation, where he will be able to retain a level of independent living, but with onsite support as needed.

Peter said: “Sarah saved my life; her efforts to get my benefit payments and sort things out made a tremendous difference.

"I’ve improved 100 per cent compared to when she started supporting me, I’m no longer scared to go out and meet other people".

Sarah said: “Peter’s mental health needs had made it very difficult for him to get to the bottom of the issues around his pending benefits claims.

“Being able to work with him to resolve this has put him in a much better state of mind and he is much better placed to look to the future.”

I’ve improved 100 per cent compared to when she started supporting me, I’m no longer scared to go out and meet other people.
