Starts At Home Day 2019: Michelle McLaughlin

The support offered to Michelle has seen her want to work with others just like her.

Michelle McLaughlin, resident at Old Liverpool Road

Michelle McLaughlin moved to Sanctuary Supported Living’s Old Liverpool Road, Warrington – which provides care and support for adults with mental health needs – in January 2017. She said: “Before coming to Old Liverpool Road I was going through some very troubled times. I was using amphetamines and experiencing drug-induced psychosis.

“I had lost parental responsibility for my youngest child and had lost family, friends and myself.”

After moving in, support workers worked with Michelle to draw up a personalised support plan, which enabled her to recover in her own time and at her own pace. Thirteen months later, her mental health had improved so much that she felt confident enough to return to living independently.

Today, the 51-year-old has her own place and has regained guardianship of her son following a long seven years apart.

Michelle commented: “I’m still in touch with Sanctuary Supported Living staff and I’d be lost without them.

“I can honestly say they saved me. I honestly don’t think I’d be where I am today without the support I received.

“Every member of the team supported me and they have given me the encouragement and confidence to become who I am today, I do not allow my mental health to define me anymore.

“Working so closely with the team has made me think I want to be like them. I’ve completed some courses in mental health and my ultimate goal is to be able to come back and work at Old Liverpool Road.”
