Starts At Home Day 2019: Philip Flanaghan
Sixty-year-old Philip can’t believe the difference in his life since moving into supported housing.
He came to Sanctuary Supported Living’s Epworth House, which provides care and support for adults with learning disabilities and mental health needs, following more than 20 years of living on his own.
Philip said: “I wasn’t sure how I would feel about moving into supported housing, but once I saw one of the flats at Epworth House I was really excited to move in.
“The staff help me to take better care of myself and support me when visiting the dentist and doctor, where I needed some urgent treatment.”
Philip credits Epworth House with his social life – since moving in he’s been attending a local community group, through which he has met lots of new friends.
He has also been having some new experiences. He commented: “I’m a lifelong football fan and, thanks to the support of staff, I’ve now attended my first match. This would have been really difficult for me to do before now.”
Philip added: “I can’t believe the difference in my life. I spent so many years on my own, I feel like I’m a brand new person.
“I am really enjoying my time here.”
