A supported housing service in Southend-On-Sea has unveiled a new, state-of-the-art outdoor gym designed to enhance health, fitness, and overall wellbeing for its young residents.
At Sanctuary Supported Living’s Stanier House, which supports young people aged 16-25 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, almost 50% of residents expressed an interest in health and fitness, but said that financial limitations were preventing them from accessing these opportunities. In response, the in-house gym was designed to make fitness accessible, empowering young people in challenging circumstances to improve their physical and mental health through exercise.
The project was primarily funded by Sanctuary Supported Living, with local building contractor, AP Construction, generously donating materials for the outdoor elements of the gym, helping to ensure it could be used year-round while maintaining its open-air design. The Stanier House team worked closely with residents during the planning process, ensuring the equipment and layout were designed to meet the residents’ fitness needs.
Aiming to support anger management, boost self-esteem, and combat isolation, the gym offers full-body workouts with diverse equipment for all fitness levels, including punch bags, battle ropes, yoga mats, and resistance bands. The gym features 24-hour outdoor access for flexibility and is equipped with QR codes for detailed workout plans. Additionally, Stanier House has introduced a booking system for clients who may feel anxious exercising around others, ensuring a safe and comfortable workout environment.
The recent unveiling event brought together senior staff members from Sanctuary Supported Living and other local support organisations, as well as representatives from the local authority, senior social workers, housing professionals, and police officers specialising in youth engagement. Attendees were encouraged to explore the equipment and enjoy refreshments, including smoothies prepared by staff. The event highlighted the hard work and dedication of the Stanier House team, receiving an outpouring of positive feedback that emphasised the community's support and project’s value for residents.
Local Service Manager, Martine King, said: “We were really keen to get this project completed so residents could start reaping the benefits of exercise and using the space as an outlet for physical fitness and mental release. The young people love it. Some have even started requesting support sessions in the gym, making appointments feel less formal and helping build rapport with our staff.”
Resident, Rosie, said: “Having a gym here means I can exercise without worrying about the cost of a membership. Plus, being able to work out with friends has really helped me feel more confident and connected with others. A healthy body really does mean a healthy mind. I’m so grateful to everyone who made this possible!”
