16 Days of Activism: Lauren’s story

28th November 2024

Sanctuary Supported Living

A woman in her 20s wearing dark clothes and with long dark hair, sat on the dark stairs like those which lead down to an underground station or walkway. She looks worried and has her hands clenched in front of her face.

The Torbay Domestic Abuse Service team supported Lauren when she needed it most.

To mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Torbay Domestic Abuse Service (TDAS), part of Sanctuary Supported Living, has shared the story of Lauren*, who received the support she needed in order to escape an abusive relationship and rebuild her life.

A year ago, Lauren was sleeping rough in Torbay and living in constant fear of abuse from her partner. She said: “Twelve months ago, I didn’t see myself where I am now. I was street homeless, and all my money was going on drugs. I was in a relationship which was abusive, and I didn’t see any way out.”

Everything began to change for Lauren when she was introduced to Sarah*, a support worker from TDAS. Despite initially feeling resistant to help, Lauren eventually began to trust Sarah, who reassured her that support would always be available if she chose to reach out. Lauren explained, “Sarah was there for me even when I felt I didn’t need or want her help. She made it clear she was only a text away if I changed my mind.”

Sarah and the TDAS team worked with Lauren, providing the non-judgemental emotional support, practical advice and protection she needed to begin to turn her life around. TDAS is also part of the Growth In Action alliance, which includes Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust and Torbay Council. This alliance connects individuals who are experiencing multiple disadvantages with essential services, including housing support and recovery services, ensuring a seamless journey from crisis to stability. This meant that when Lauren felt ready to seek help, she was supported with a coordinated, holistic response that addressed both her immediate and longer-term needs.

"I felt listened-to, understood and that they really wanted to help."

Lauren said: “TDAS and the Growth In Action alliance supported me through a tough time. I felt listened-to, understood and that they really wanted to help. They gave me clothes, food and all that I needed. The police even got me a vape!”

With support from the TDAS team, as well as the broader Growth in Action services, Lauren was able to escape her abusive relationship, secure a safe place to stay, and begin her journey towards recovery. Over the past year, Lauren has made remarkable progress. She is now living back at home with her family, working part-time, attending weekly recovery groups, and has been clean from heroin for over 100 days.

Reflecting on her experience working with TDAS and the difference it has made, Lauren said: “I am now living free from abuse. I also understand about red flags in a relationship and how to recognise when a partner is abusive. I’d like to say a big thank you to TDAS and Growth in Action – without their support, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

Claudia O’Neill, Local Service Manager for TDAS, said, “As we mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Lauren’s experience highlights how timely and compassionate intervention can transform lives and break cycles of abuse. Lauren’s journey is an incredible example of resilience and the power of support. It’s been a privilege to work with her and see how far she’s come.

“TDAS and our partner services are dedicated to providing the support needed for domestic abuse survivors across Torbay, and Lauren’s story shows what can be achieved when someone is given the right help at the right time.”
