Stephen Arrowsmith, a Care and Support Assistant at Sanctuary Supported Living’s Clover Court in Lowestoft, has won the Care Newcomer Award at the East of England regional Great British Care Awards 2021, after being nominated by his colleagues.

Clover Court is a supported housing service which provides fully wheelchair-accessible accommodation with Care Quality Commission (CQC) Outstanding-rated care for people with physical disabilities. This is Stephen’s first role in social care, having previously worked as a chef, but since joining the service during the first lockdown in early 2020, he has clearly found his calling and hasn’t looked back.

Stephen regularly uses his catering skills for the benefit of residents, and his support has given them a new-found confidence in the kitchen. This together with his hard work dedication in caring for residents, really impressed the award judges.

David Perkins, Local Service Manager at Clover Court, said; “I am incredibly proud of Stephen and everything he’s achieved since joining the team. His skills from his earlier career in hospitality have become a real hit with the residents who enjoy spending time in the kitchen with him as well as his now legendary barbecues. He also recently became a keyworker for a resident and the support that he has given them has given them such a lift and a new lease of life.”

"Stephen’s culinary skills from his earlier career in hospitality have become a real hit with the residents."

Following his success at the East of England regional awards, Stephen will now go on face the winners of the other regions at the national finals of the Great British Care Awards, which will be held in March 2022.
